International Museum Day

International Museum Day is marked today at international level, under the principles of sustainability and well-being, with hundreds of activities planned in Portuguese museums, from north to south and on the islands.

“Museums, Sustainability and Well-being” is the theme proposed this year by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), promoter of International Museum Day, a date celebrated annually since 1997 to strengthen the ties of museums with society.

In Portugal, dozens of public and private entities from the mainland and the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira have responded to the challenge from the Directorate-General of Cultural Heritage (DGPC) for national museums and the Portuguese network to create special programmes for these dates, usually free of charge.

In the DGPC page dedicated to today you can find hundreds of activities: from workshops and picnics at Casa de Camilo, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, to guided tours in multiple institutions, including shows such as, for example, a thematic concert of the Banda de Empregados da Companhia Carris de Ferro de Lisboa, at Museu da Carris, in Lisbon, among many others.
